Where do I even begin with this one? So, I jumped into director Marcel Walz’s Brute 1976 completely blind, and I wish I could have stayed that way once this unhinged, uninteresting waste of time was finished. Obviously, you’re not going to have to wait until the end of this review to find out if I liked this movie.
Once again, the trailer caught my attention and got me excited, but the movie turned out to be a complete bait and switch. I was looking forward to what I expected would be a gory, gritty splatter fest, but unfortunately, I was treated to a hard dose of WHAT THE FUCK AM I WATCHING? So, kick back and get comfy as I tell you a little bit about why Brute 1976 put the BRUTal in my watching experience and why I never plan on watching it again.
I’ll get what I DID like about the movie out of the way because a couple of sentences should suffice. The cinematography is very well done. This film is supposed to take place in the mid-1970s, and it’s very convincing. The location is situated in a remote deserted area, which is supposed to create the atmosphere, and again, it is very well done. Okay, so, that’s about it for positives.

This film is supposedly about a van of unlikeable, but all-inclusive characters who roll up in a ghost town called Savage to conduct a photo shoot for a magazine. But it just so happens that the town is inhabited by a bunch of colorfully costumed insane folks who are members of a murderous cult that doesn’t take too kindly to outsiders. Surprise, surprise!
Essentially, the intruders start dropping off one by one at the hands of the “family”. So, it’s another “who will survive and what will be left of them?” situation, but this one’s just really boring because of the bad dialogue and acting…and just bad everything. Apart from one kill which gives a literal meaning to “just the tip”, the rest aren’t really that inventive or memorable. There are a couple of predictable twists here and there, but again, nothing shocking.
I didn’t care for Brute 1976 because honestly, I watched this while sober. The acting, script and story were all terrible. Maybe I would have had more fun if I’d been drinking some brute bubbly or something while watching? I get that this is a grindhouse film, and it’s supposed to be a kind of homage to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977) but come on. The plot, acting and gore are all lackluster and for having a runtime of around an hour and a half, it goes on for longer than needed.
Brute 1976 is coming to VOD on September 30, 2025. If you watch it, let me know what you think.
